To make it even easier for more seniors throughout Jefferson County to take advantage of FREE MEDICARE COUNSELING, United Way Area Agency on Aging (UWAAA) will host seven off-site events in separate locations during this year’s Medicare Open Enrollment.
Open Enrollment for Medicare begins October 15th and continues through December 7th every year.
These events are in addition to Medicare counseling appointments that can be requested all year long, and are regularly conducted at UWAAA’s offices on the campus of United Way of Central Alabama in Forest Park.
UWAAA’s Susan Hackney, who coordinates the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) at the agency, said that Medicare can be very confusing and it’s important for consumers to know which parts they need to sign up for and which of the many coverage options are best for their particular needs.
“Our Medicare counseling services are not only free, but also completely unbiased,” said Susan. “We ask questions, evaluate each person’s circumstances and simply point out the plans that address their needs. They can then make their own decision with greater assurance that they’re properly covered; and it can often save them money.”

These events are not just for people who are signing up for Medicare for the first time. Open Enrollment is the one opportunity each year when you’re also allowed to make changes to the Medicare coverage you already have. And that’s what many people need to do. Circumstances change, so the coverage that was right for someone last year might not be anymore. There may even more cost-effective options that were not previously available.
Susan pointed out that, regardless of how satisfied you might be with the coverage you’ve had for years, it pays to come in for a “Medicare Check-up.”
“Let our Medicare counselors take a look at your plan, answer a few questions and you might just find that there’s something better for you out there,” she said.
