The Prescription for a Healthier State

Prescription Drug Assistance for Improved Quality of Life

SenioRx is a prescription-drug-assistance program of the United Way Area Agency on Aging designed to help qualified Alabamians receive free or reduced-cost prescription medications for the management of chronic health conditions. By reducing economic stress due to the high cost of medication, this program helps ensure that recipients stay healthier, have fewer doctor visits and hospital stays and enjoy a greatly improved quality of life.

Prescription medications can be prohibitively expensive – especially for many seniors and people with disabilities. Recognizing this widespread hardship, the Governor’s Office and the Alabama State Legislature have established funding for a statewide prescription-drug-assistance program serving qualified legal residents who have chronic health conditions. In connection with this initiative, the Alabama Department of Senior Services (ADSS), together with each Area Agency on Aging, have developed a statewide delivery system to ensure this assistance is provided to all qualified seniors and individuals with a certified disability in every county in Alabama*.

The objectives of this program are to reduce economic stress on low-income individuals and promote better health. In doing so, quality of life can be greatly improved for Alabama’s older population with chronic health conditions, as well as for individuals with disabilities at any age. With proper medication and management of chronic medical conditions, residents can reduce their need for frequent trips to the doctor, hospital admissions, emergency room visits and nursing home placement.

*SenioRx does not provide short-term medications, including antibiotics, for treatment of acute conditions.

Those who may qualify for this service include:

  • Individuals age 55 or older with a chronic medical condition requiring prescription drug medication management and have Medicare or no prescription insurance.
  • Individuals of any age and have been deemed by Social Security to have a disability…or have applied for disability and are waiting on a decision…or have a doctor’s declaration of disability…or are in the 24-month Medicare waiting period.
